Climate Control - HVAC Spring Maintenance Checklist

It was just a few weeks ago when the Groundhog predicted Spring was just around the corner. Well as of March 20th Spring is officially here. And after a long cold winter it’s time to prepare for the ups and downs of Spring weather. Here is a short and handy HVAC spring maintenance checklist to make sure your system is ready to Spring into action! (yes, pun intended).

Change Your Furnace Filter

Usually when the seasons change that is a good reminder to change the filter in your furnace. Replacing your filter every 1-3 months will keep your HVAC system working well. Changing a dirty filter can improve the energy efficiency of your HVAC system up to 5%. In addition for households with pets or owners suffering from allergies, changing the filter every month can help improve the air quality of your home.

Turn on Your Ceiling Fans

Use those ceiling fans…there not just for decoration. During the spring the use of ceiling fans can help circulate fresh air and improve the air quality as well.

Clean Your Vents

Vacuum your vents. While you are doing your regular house vacuuming, check that all the vents in the house are open and can pass air freely. Remember to make sure that carpets/rugs, furniture or curtains don’t block the vents.

Remove Dust

While dusting the house, remember to dust off your electronics (TVs, VCRs, cable boxes, gaming consoles etc.), lights, ceiling and bathroom fan blades. Less dust on these items means less dust picked up by your HVAC unit.

Above all, removing dust and debris is the best HVAC spring maintenance checklist advice you can take. Particles in the air can clog your system and drastically affect the air quality in your home.

Clean Behind Your Refrigerator

Vacuum your refrigerator coils. You may not realize but dust can build up behind your refrigerator. This build-up of dust on your refrigerator coils will cause the motor to work hard and use more energy. Also, cleaning the refrigerator coils will help improve the efficiency of your refrigerator.

Adjust Your Thermostat

Be sure to adjust your house thermostat. This can be easily done with a programmable thermostat, such as Nest. If you don’t have one already, it’s easy to set one up before the arrival of that summer heat. Products such as Nest are great for saving energy and helping your HVAC system run more efficiently. It is easy to program your house thermostat so when you get home from work your house is nice and comfortable.

Clean Around Outdoor AC Unit

Clean out around your outdoor unit. Over the winter months, dirt, leaves, and debris most likely have built up around your outside HVAC unit. As part of your HVAC Spring checklist remember to clear away leaves, mulch and dirt as well as trimming back shrubs and plants growing near your outdoor HVAC unit. You should have a 1 to 2-foot clearance around your outside HVAC unit to increase the airflow and help the performance of your system.

Schedule a Tune-up to Complete Your HVAC Spring Maintenance Checklist
