What’s Causing Indoor Temperature Changes?
Geothermal, Heating & Cooling
A common complaint we hear from Lexington home and business owners during the winter is that they are experiencing uncomfortable temperature fluctuations indoors. Problems with your home’s heating components as well as other issues may cause these unwanted fluctuations; below are a few common causes we see.
Covered vents
Heating vents around the home or office need to remain uncovered for air to flow properly through the system. When registers and return air grills are covered by furniture, rugs, or other items, air flow will be restricted, which causes temperature fluctuations in those areas. If vents need to be shut, make sure to use the vent’s baffles rather than household items to restrict heat flow.
Malfunctioning dampers
Zoning systems are increasingly popular for improving comfort and efficiency throughout a home or building, but when the dampers used to create zoned heating malfunction, temperature fluctuations will occur. A faulty damper that has become stuck open or closed will cause a zone to become unbalanced, and temperatures will not be controlled properly.
Duct leaks
Leaks in the duct system will allow heated air to escape, and cool, unconditioned air to enter the system. This causes temperature fluctuations, as areas of the home or building affected by leaking ducts will not receive the heating called for. Cooler air entering the duct system through leaks will also negatively impact indoor temperatures.
Poor insulation
The quality of insulation in a home or building greatly impacts heat retention. When insulation is compromised or lacking, heat can escape quickly. This will cause temperature fluctuations, and is especially noticeable between spaces with quality insulation versus poor insulation.
Drafts
Window and door frames which aren’t sealed as well as windows and doors which do not close properly cause spaces to become drafty. Cold, outdoor air enters the home or business, causing temperatures to vary. Drafts can also occur when vents are not sealed properly.
