Top 5 Reasons Your HVAC System is Not Working

Heating & Cooling

Is your HVAC system giving you pain? You have no clue why it suddenly stops working? Then it is time to have a look at it yourself! Sure, you are no expert and your knowing won’t fix the problem, but it is better to take a look at the common issues that might be affecting the working of your HVAC than to get the whole system checked for repairs and causing pain for your pockets! Let’s see some of these problems.

1. Dirt Filled Condensers and Evaporators

You need to check the power first, see if there are no electrical wiring issues with your HVAC. If that is not the problem then you can be sure that dirt is your enemy. Your condensers and evaporators can get filled with dirt and clog due to it. You need to service your HVAC regularly.

2. Water Leakage in the Indoor Unit

Your HVAC indoor unit may have a leakage. This leakage damages your home. It means your HVAC system is making excessive condensation on the suction line and evaporator coil where there is lack of insulation. If a part of the coil is left exposed, condensation collected on it can drip to the floor. Sometimes, the reason for leakage is frozen ice on the coil which melts and leaks. A blocked condensation drain can also cause leakage. Refrigerant can also leak from your system. Your furnace and air conditioner can both leak water.

3. Air Temperature

If your HVAC does not set on the desired temperature and you feel that your HVAC system is not working efficiently, you could have a leak in the ducts. Your warm air is probably leaking through the duct. If your HVAC changes room temperature frequently and automatically then your thermostat may be malfunctioning. You should check it before you check the HVAC system.

4. Issue in Compressor

Your HVAC compressor might be affected. To check it, turn the power off completely. Clean your outdoor compressor. Set your thermostat to below room temperature so you can check the fan. The fan should turn when you set the thermostat. If it doesn’t, you should stick a screwdriver in between the fan blades to give it a boost to turn. If it turns due to this, it shows your capacitor needs changing.

5. AC Doesn’t Turn Off

If you have trouble turning off your HVAC, you can assume that the outdoor run relay contacts have been welded together. A frequent electrical arcing over the relay can cause that. You should turn off the power, dismantle the relay and pull the contents apart to get a solution to this problem.
