Protect Your HVAC System from Icy Conditions

Heating & Cooling

Extreme winter weather can damage your HVAC system. Be prepared.

Central Kentucky is generally a warm place, but that doesn’t mean it’s a stranger to harsh winter weather. Heavy snowfalls, freezing rain, and ice storms aren’t unheard of here.

That’s why homeowners need to know how to protect their HVAC systems when the temperature drops. A properly functioning HVAC system is crucial to avoid losing heat or experiencing costly equipment damage.

Below are steps to take depending on the type of heating equipment you have.

How can I protect my heat pump?

Turn it off, and switch your thermostat to emergency heat. This will prevent damage to your outdoor unit’s fan motor and components.

Can I use my gas or wood burning fireplace during an ice storm?

Yes, you can use your fireplace. But Climate Control highly recommends that you have carbon monoxide detectors. If they are battery-operated, make sure the batteries are charged. We offer battery-operated low-level CO detectors. Also, it’s a good idea to crack a window (about an inch should do it). This will help with fresh air and the fireplace draft.

Should I use a generator?

Never operate a generator indoors. And when using it, make sure it is several feet from doors, windows, or vents. If it’s too close, exhaust could get into your home. You never want to overload circuits either. If you have questions about wiring, please call a licensed electrician before trying anything yourself.

Will my gas furnace work during a power outage?

No, gas furnaces require 120 volts of power. They won’t be able to operate during an outage.

Will my electric water heater work during a power outage?

No, electric water heaters also will not work during a power outage.

Will my gas water heater work during a power outage?

Yes, your gas water heater will still work during a power outage.

How can I protect my home’s plumbing during a winter storm?

To avoid frozen pipes and other plumbing problems, we recommend reading this blog post from our sister company Turbo Plumbing Pros.

Ice storms and other forms of extreme winter weather can present safety concerns. But by taking proper precautions, you’ll have a better chance of staying safe and warm until the ice melts. If you have questions, or if your system has been impacted by weather, please call Climate Control. We’re always happy to help.
