Convert or Add On?

If there is space available, many who work at home choose to convert a room from its former use into office space. Sometimes this is an unused bedroom, or space is found in an unfinished attic, basement, or garage. Finishing out these spaces means you’ll need to add a heating system, because unlike bedrooms, basements, attics, and garages are not typically connected to the home’s heating and cooling systems.

If you don’t have space available, you may choose to build a home office on to your original house. This addition will probably have to be placed away from the home’s center, and will need a heating solution to keep it warm this winter.

Heating Options for Home Offices

• Extend your existing heating system. If your furnace or heat pump can handle heating additional square footage, you may choose to extend your home’s duct system and heat the home office with the same equipment. Or, you may choose to upgrade to a larger furnace and tie in to the original heating system.
• The above solution doesn’t always work, practically or financially. In this case, adding a second heating system which serves only the new office is a practical choice. Ductless mini-splits, for example, are simple to install and will heat the home office independent of the rest of the home.
