Keep Your AC Coils Clean for Effective Cooling

Heating & Cooling

family-footer

Lexington air conditioners are made up of many different components which work together to provide the cooling you need. The system’s coils are two essential components which need to be kept clean in order to function properly. Learn more about the coils’ functions, why cleanliness is so important, and what you can do to keep your coils in great shape!

The job of AC coils

Air conditioning systems utilize evaporator coils and condenser coils. Evaporator coils are housed indoors near the air handler; condenser coils are housed outdoors within the condenser. The coils are connected by refrigerant lines, and refrigerant flows between them. After moving through the expansion valve which lowers its pressure, refrigerant reaches the evaporator coil where it takes a gaseous form. As air flows over the evaporator coil, the refrigerant inside absorbs heat from the air. The refrigerant becomes pressurized in the compressor and flows to the condenser coil. Here, the heated refrigerant gas becomes liquid and gives off the collected heat, expelling it into the air outdoors.

Air conditioners provide cooling through heat exchange – they don’t actually make cold air and pump it into your home or business. For heat exchange to occur, the coils need clear surface area – when coils are clean, the process happens efficiently; when coils are covered in grime and debris, heat exchange doesn’t come easily.

Combatting dirty coils

Dirty air conditioner coils cause a number of issues, including energy waste, stress on the system, and uncomfortable indoor conditions. To avoid these issues, have your evaporator and condenser coils cleaned once per year by an HVAC professional. In between cleanings, keep vegetation cleared away from your exterior condenser to help keep condenser coils cleaner.

To schedule your annual air conditioner coil cleaning, contact Climate Control today. Our NATE-certified technicians will perform a thorough cleaning to improve system performance and boost efficiency.
