Gas Furnace Safety
Heating & Cooling, Indoor Air Quality
If you use a gas furnace to heat your Lexington home, know that these systems are generally very safe. Though with any natural gas system, you’ll want to take some safety precautions because there is still a risk of a gas leak or carbon monoxide leak. Put in place the following gas furnace safety measures to keep your family well-protected this winter.
Furnace Tune-ups
A professional furnace tune-up each fall will help keep your family safe over heating season. During your tune-up, a skilled technician inspects the system to identify and solve potential safety issues. Your system will be tested for gas leaks and heat exchangers inspected for cracks which could allow carbon monoxide to escape the system, into your home.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Homes with gas appliances should have carbon monoxide detectors installed on every level; if you don’t already have them, purchase and install them now. Test each detector for proper functioning by pressing the unit’s test button. Replace batteries if necessary.
Furnace Filters
To prevent your furnace from overheating, make sure you always operate the system with clean filters. Check your furnace filter once per month during the winter, and replace it as needed according to the specifications of the manufacturer.
Clean and Clear Surroundings
Keep the area surrounding your furnace clean and clear of dirt and debris, as the furnace cabinet can heat up as it operates. Do not store items around the furnace; store items at least three feet away from the system. Never store flammable or combustible materials near the furnace.
System Repairs
Should you notice performance issues or other malfunctions occurring within your gas furnace, you should call a technician for service immediately. If the issue is a safety hazard, it is imperative that it is resolved as soon as possible.
If you smell gas in your home, your entire family should exit the home immediately. Contact your gas utility provider and the fire department. Do not reenter the home until it has been cleared. If your gas furnace has been found to be the source of the leak, do not operate it again until a qualified HVAC technician has repaired the problem.
